Role Overview:

Reporting to the Chief Operating Officer, the UK Engineering Director will lead our railway engineering operations across the UK. This role combines strategic management with technical expertise in mechanical and electrical engineering. Responsibilities include shaping engineering strategy, ensuring compliance with safety and performance standards, and influencing innovation in fleet maintenance and project delivery.

HOW YOU CAN MAKE AN IMPACT

Main Goals

To deliver safe, punctual, reliable, and cost effective fleet operations. The UK Engineering Director will support performance teams with technical expertise and ensure staff proficiency and safety through modern engineering practices.

Strategic and Technical Leadership

Serve as the Technical Professional Head of Engineering and act as the Entity in Charge of Maintenance Level 1. Lead engineering strategy, governance, and change management initiatives, ensuring compliance with Railway Group Standards and all current legislation.

Operational Excellence

Develop and implement Reliability Centred Maintenance (RCM) and On Condition Maintenance (OCM) programmes. Monitor fleet performance and operational costs, driving continuous improvement and engineering optimisation. The role also oversees inspection and maintenance activities aligned with safety and environmental systems, maintaining and improving rolling stock maintenance practices.

Governance and Compliance

Identify and mitigate engineering risks affecting fleet safety and reliability. Produce technical investigations and reports, maintain comprehensive technical documentation and oversee safety incident reporting and resolution.

Collaboration and Stakeholder Engagement

Align engineering priorities with Heads of Performance, Supply Chain, and Locations. Build strong relationships with manufacturing partners and customers, participate in cross functional work groups and strategic meetings.

HOW YOU WILL CONTRIBUTE

Essential:

•Chartered Engineer (IMechE or IET).
•Degree or equivalent experience in a technical field (including rolling stock).
•5+ years of experience managing engineering projects and maintenance teams.
•Proven management in dynamic, high-pressure environments.
•Strong customer-focused mindset and commitment to quality.
•Experience of managing engineering change and directing senior teams.

Desirable:

•Experience with maintenance IT systems and programs.
•Financial management and budget oversight.
•Background in technical investigations and audits.
•Experience in international organisations.
•Proven risk management and documentation skills.
