Role Overview:

Reporting to the Deputy Head of Production, you will work a rotating shift roster, including weekends and Bank Holidays. You will be responsible for managing the Production team, providing the business with contractual levels of performance. Acting independently and as part of a wider team, making decisions and managing own priorities whilst contributing to the companies KPI's and values.

HOW YOU CAN MAKE AN IMPACT

Organisational

As a key leader within the production environment, you will be responsible for managing a diverse team of onsite personnel, including Systems Technicians, VMI Technicians, Operations Technicians, Electrical and Mechanical Technicians, Traincare Technicians, Assistant Technicians, and Traincare Operatives. The role will involve providing first-line management, including conducting appraisals, managing attendance, overseeing disciplinary processes, and ensuring competency assessments are carried out effectively.

You will take ownership of overseeing all site visitors, including sub-contractors, ensuring they are fully compliant with Risk Assessments, Method Statements, and Depot Safety Training requirements. You will also ensure that all visitors possess the necessary competencies to operate safely and effectively within the depot environment.

A key part of your responsibilities will be to ensure effective rostering to meet contractual obligations and to provide additional resources for outstabling, special events, and possessions. You will plan and allocate work in line with maintenance schedules, covering planned, corrective, overhaul, and additional tasks, while ensuring that all personnel are competent and confident in their assigned duties.
Supporting the development of your team, you will mentor and guide new starters through initial and on the job training, including enhanced training and assessments. You will also maintain your own competencies, ensuring timely planning and addressing of any upcoming or overdue requirements.

You will represent the organisation in performance meetings, particularly in relation to delay attribution, and liaise with Nexus regarding off-depot facilities such as the Howden Satellite Depot and the Nexus Learning Centre. Your technical competence will include manual point switching, panel operation, blocking, and depot isolation procedures.

In support of business operations, you will ensure that trains are delivered to the required standards of safety, reliability, and presentation, in line with environmental legislation. You will respond to in service faults and breakdowns, taking control in “first response” situations and supporting customers as needed.

You will ensure accurate documentation of all fleet maintenance activities, both paper-based and digital, and support materials management by ensuring correct stock coding and efficient handling of warranty or repair returns. You will also ensure that tools, equipment, facilities, and assets are regularly checked, audited, and maintained to the highest standards.

The role will include promoting a zero-harm culture and ensuring compliance with engineering, hygiene, tool, and calibration management procedures. You will initiate and implement actions to prevent non-conformities, safety issues, QHSE incidents, and process or system deficiencies, ensuring timely and thorough reporting.

You will actively support the implementation of safety and quality systems through inspections, in-process checks, safety tours, and general condition assessments. You will also conduct annual risk assessments, maintain the risk register, and ensure that all risks are identified and quantified appropriately.

Finally, you will embody and promote value-based behaviours, setting a strong example for others and addressing inappropriate conduct when necessary, while remaining flexible and proactive, undertaking additional relevant tasks as required to support the success of the team and the wider organisation.

HOW YOU WILL CONTRIBUTE

•Relevant experience in rail, depot, and managerial roles.
•NVQ Level 5 or equivalent in a relevant subject.
•ILM Level 5 in Leadership and Management.
•Proven experience in managing teams, planning, and engaging with stakeholders.

•Understanding and interpreting legislation and standards related to health and safety.
•Proficient in identifying, assessing, mitigating, and documenting risks to ensure compliance with relevant legislation.
•Passionate about continual improvement, operational excellence, and enhancing user experience.
•Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite.
•Willing to become a certified first aid responder and fire marshal/warden.
•Competent in Personal Track Safety (PTS), Designated Person (DP), Nominated •Person (NP), and Rolling Stock maintenance standards.
•Medically fit and compliant with random and “for cause” drug and alcohol testing.
•Valid UK Driving License.
•Open to temporary assignments at other Stadler or customer locations.

Desirable

•Proven extensive experience in an operational transport and production environment with knowledge of Rolling Stock units.
•Electrical and mechanical time-served or equivalent qualification with suitable shop floor experience.
•Knowledge and experience in advanced Lean, Kaizen, 6S, and other modern production techniques.
•Knowledge and experience in conducting and contributing to complex root cause investigations.
•Strong knowledge, experience, and understanding of risk and safety in the workplace, within a transport environment, and from a production perspective.
•Proven experience in identifying, assessing, and mitigating all manner of risks, and documenting risk registers to demonstrate compliance and form the basis of safe systems of work.
•Formal education to NVQ Level 6 or equivalent in a relevant subject.

•A starting salary of £50,109 increasing to £55,120 upon completion of competencies plus a 20% shift allowance.
