Metrology in the digital age - extending the recalibration period of thermal energy meters by anomaly detection on Big Data.

Buildings account for more than 30% of the overall energy consumption worldwide, and hence energy efficient buildings are key for achieving climate saving goals. For that, it is necessary to be able to accurately measure the energy flow in buildings. Our customers already have installed Belimo products offering this feature and a significant number of the devices are connected to our cloud, providing valuable data to be analyzed. One key question to support the development of new features is to thoroughly understand the long-term stability of the devices and to automatically detect anomalies in the energy measurement. Currently thermal energy meters are required to be recalibrated after some years. In more than 80% of the cases, they are just replaced by a new meter for economical reasons, even though they are fully functional. This causes a huge amount of unnecessary waste and a loss of valuable resources. Reliable functional analysis of the meter during operation can extend the service life of the devices and avoid the need for routine replacement.
