PhD position (60%) at the Chair of Photographic Media

The Department of Arts, Media, Philosophy at the University of Basel invites applications for a PhD position (60%) at the Chair of Photographic Media.
The 4-year position is based at the Chair of Photographic Media in the Digital Age (Prof. Dr. Estelle Blaschke) as part of the Seminar for Media Studies and the Department of Arts, Media, Philosophy. Starting as of August 1, 2026, or upon agreement, the position is subject to a positive evaluation after the first year and a subsequent extension for up to three additional years. 

Your position

The successful candidate will conduct independent academic research within the framework of their own doctoral project (dissertation) and will teach one course per semester (2 SWS).

Your profile

Applicants must hold a university degree in Media Studies, Visual Studies, Science and Technology Studies, Art History, Cultural Studies, Digital Humanities, or a related discipline. In line with the research areas of the chair (including i.a. digital image cultures, image technologies in knowledge production, visual STS, photography and algorithms), the proposed research should address the contemporary, historical, and theoretical dimensions of photographic media, taking into consideration digital applications and their cultural, social, economic, and political impact.
Applicants are expected to demonstrate strong teamwork and organizational skills, an interest in innovative teaching methods, and a willingness to contribute to the chair's public outreach activities.
