Overview

The Clean Mouse Facility (CMF) is a service unit of the interfaculty Experimental Animal Center (EAC) at the University of Bern. The CMF provides experimental housing of axenic and gnotobiotic mice at the highest quality standards for biomedical research. Our work is guided by the 3R principles (Reduce, Refine, Replace), the Culture of Care, and strict compliance with all legal and ethical regulations.

We are seeking a experienced certified Animal Caretaker for Axenic and Gnotobiotic Animal Housing with Focus on Reproductive Technologies.

Responsibilities

  • Daily animal husbandry tasks for mice housed in isolator and isocage systems (ABSL1 and ABSL2)
  • Regular health monitoring and assessment of animals in accordance with applicable guidelines
  • Breeding, mating, and monitoring of assigned mouse lines
  • Supply of isolators with sterile materials, including sterile imports and transfers
  • Professional and sterile export of animals from isolators for scientific use
  • Documentation and data recording related to animal husbandry, hygiene, and equipment
  • Participation and performing reproductive techniques, including vasectomy of males, embryo transfer, in vitro fertilization (IVF), cryopreservation of embryos, as well as sperm collection and cryopreservation
  • Handling, quality assessment, thawing, and transfer of cryopreserved embryos and sperm in accordance with established protocols
  • Support in the management and maintenance of cryopreserved mouse lines
  • Sample collection in accordance with applicable guidelines (e.g. microbiological monitoring and genetic analyses)
  • Cleaning, disinfection, and reprocessing of rooms, cages, bottles, connectors, operating materials, laboratory glassware, and equipment to maintain hygienic standards
  • Collaboration and communication with researchers and facility staff

Your Profile

  • Completed vocational training as a Certified Animal Caretaker EFZ (specialization in laboratory animals) or an equivalent qualification
  • Practical experience in the care and handling of laboratory animals
  • Experience in axenic and/or gnotobiotic animal husbandry is an advantage but not required; thorough training will be provided
  • Experience in reproductive techniques such as vasectomy of males, embryo transfer, in vitro fertilization (IVF), cryopreservation of embryos, and sperm collection and cryopreservation is considered an asset
  • Experience in the handling, quality assessment, thawing, and transfer of cryopreserved embryos and sperm is desirable
  • Careful, structured, and reliable working style, including routine tasks
  • High sense of responsibility and enjoyment of precise work under strict hygiene and safety requirements
  • Team-oriented, proactive, and resilient
  • Willingness to work in an ABSL-2 environment
  • Good command of either German or English; basic knowledge of the other language or willingness to learn it
  • Planned weekend duty with appropriate time and money compensation in accordance with cantonal regulation
