SNF-funded PhD position in lipid metabolism (f/m/d)

Berne, 100 %

Dysregulation of lipid metabolism plays a key role in development and progression of metabolic disorders including obesity, type 2 diabetes and metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD). Our group's overall goal is to understand lipid metabolism in human and to develop novel approaches for deep metabolic phenotyping.

What you can expect

We are looking for a highly motivated PhD student to join our team at the institute of Clinical Chemistry, University Hospital Bern to pursue a PhD in the field of metabolism.
This project will investigate the underlying molecular mechanism that regulate lipid metabolism in MASLD. In particular, the research will focus on lipid signalling associated to oxidative stress that potentially contributes to harmful impact of steatosis and progression of fibrosis. This research will require a combination of complementary approaches, including molecular biology, biochemistry, analytical chemistry and computational biology.

Your Profile

Applicants should hold a master's degree or equivalent in molecular biology, biochemistry or analytical chemistry and have a strong interest in metabolism. Experience working with mass spectrometry is desirable and experience working with laboratory animal is an advantage. Candidates should be highly organized and capable of working both independently and within the team. Good interpersonal and communication skills as well as fluency in both spoken and written English is essential.

What we offer

We provide the candidate with a supporting and state-of-the-art research environment to develop scientifically and professionally. The successful candidate will be able to work and get training on a multi-disciplinary research project. The candidate has the opportunity to work with pre-clinical models as well as participating in clinical studies.
The position is fully-funded by Swiss National Science Foundation and available from Jan 2024 (exact date can be arranged upon agreement).
