PostDoc Position in Artificial Intelligence for Automated Medical Reporting (100%)

The Center for medical Image Analysis and Navigation (CIAN) group at the Department of Biomedical Engineering of the University of Basel, led by Prof. Dr. Philippe C. Cattin, is seeking a highly motivated PostDoc candidate to join our interdisciplinary team at the intersection of artificial intelligence, natural language processing (NLP), and medical informatics. Your research will focus on developing agentic AI systems to automate the generation of structured medical reports, with applications in clinical workflows, and research documentation.

Your position

  • Develop AI-driven pipelines to automatically generate pre-structured medical reports (e.g., literature summaries, clinical trial documentation) from minimal input data (e.g., raw measurements, annotations, or unstructured notes).
  • Design and implement “gluing code” to integrate AI solutions into cohesive systems, ensuring robustness and reproducibility.
  • Write and maintain module tests to validate the performance, accuracy, and safety of the generated outputs, with a focus on clinical relevance.
  • Investigate research questions such as:
  • What is the minimal input required to generate high-quality, domain-specific reports (e.g., trade-offs between data sparsity and output fidelity)?
  • How can agentic AI autonomously curate and synthesize literature for dynamic report generation (e.g., real-time evidence summaries)?
  • How to ensure traceability and explainability in AI-generated medical documentation?
  • Collaborate with clinicians and domain experts to align technical solutions with real-world needs.
  • Publish results in top-tier conferences/journals and present at international workshops.

Your profile

  • Ph.D. degree in Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence, Data Science, Biomedical Engineering, or a related field (or equivalent experience).
  • Strong programming skills in Python, with experience in:
  • NLP/LLM frameworks (e.g., Hugging Face, LangChain, opencode,...).
  • Software engineering practices (e.g., version control, testing, modular design).
  • Data pipelines (e.g., handling medical data, APIs, or databases).
  • Research mindset: Ability to formulate and tackle open-ended questions in AI for healthcare.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English (German is a plus but not required).
  • Team player with enthusiasm for interdisciplinary collaboration.

We offer you

  • A fully funded PostDoc position (100%, 2 years) with a competitive salary according to Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF) guidelines.
  • Cutting-edge research in a dynamic, international environment at the Department of Biomedical Engineering (University of Basel), one of Europe's leading universities.
  • Access to high-performance computing resources and collaborations with clinical partners (e.g., University Hospital Basel).
  • Mentorship from Prof. Cattin and opportunities to shape the direction of your research.
  • Flexible working conditions and a supportive team culture.
