Professor in German linguistics (open rank)

A position as Professor in German linguistics with a focus on digital and usage-based linguistics (open rank) is to be filled at the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences of the University of Basel beginning on 1. February 2027 or by appointment with the successful applicant. 

Depending on the qualifications of the person to be appointed, the position is filled as a Tenure Track Assistant Professor (TTAP), an Associate Professor or a Full Professor.

Your position

  • We are looking for a person to teach German linguistics in German at bachelor's, master's and doc-toral level.
  • The position is also essential for the interdisciplinary Bachelor in Language and Communication, the interdisciplinary Master program Language and Communication, and the doctoral program in Linguistics (Hermann Paul School of Linguistics Basel-Freiburg).
  • The professor strengthens empirical linguistics, digital methodologies and research approaches in Basel linguistics.
  • The course planning is coordinated with the professors of the German Department and the Department of Linguistics and Literary Studies.
  • Excellent research on language use of German with a focus on digital methods is expected.

Your profile

  • Applicants demonstrate excellent publication and research activity following their doctorate, in accord-ance with their academic age.
  • Applicants should strengthen and complement the range of topics offered by Basel linguistics in the field of empirical linguistics.
  • The focus of research and teaching should be on qualitative and/or quantitative computer-based methods as well as the associated pragmatic analysis of patterns of language use in contemporary language.
  • Different specializations are possible, for example in the field of different media constellations (oral and written interaction, digital and mobile communication, human-machine interaction, AI-based text generation, etc.), as well as in connection with interaction analysis, discourse analysis, sociolinguistics, knowledge communication or current language change.
  • Teaching experience and a willingness to teach students on all levels in an innovative and practice-oriented manner are expected.
  • In addition, applicants should demonstrate successful acquisition of third-party funding.
  • Teamwork skills and a willingness to participate in university administration are essential.
