Professorship in European Archaeology (open-rank)

A Professorship in European Archaeology (Ur- und Frühgeschichte) is to be filled at the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences of the University of Basel, to commence on August 1, 2026, or by appointment.
 
Depending on the qualifications of the person to be appointed, the professorship is filled as a Tenure Track Assistant Professor (TTAP), an Associate Professor or a Full Professor.

Your position

We are looking for a scholar to represent the entire field of European Archaeology (Ur- und Frühgeschichte) across teaching and research:
  • The successful candidate will teach European Archaeology at both undergraduate and postgraduate level (BA, MA, PhD)
  • and will foster interdisciplinary collaborations in research and teaching, with the other disciplines in ancient studies
  • and will contribute to the development of the integrated study programme of the Department of Ancient Civilizations. 
  • A research focus on Central Europe is desirable.
  • The successful candidate will coordinate the curriculum in European Archaeology with the other Professorships in the Department of Ancient Civilizations as well as the Professorship for Integrative Prehistory and Archaeological Science (Integrative Prähistorische und Naturwissenschaftliche Archäologie, IPNA) in the Department of Environmental Sciences.

Your profile

  • Applicants must have an excellent doctorate and an excellent record in research and publications, according to their academic age.
  • The focus of their research should be compatible with the research profile of the Department of Ancient Civilizations and the Professorship for Integrative Prehistory and Archaeological Science.
  • They are expected to have teaching experience and be committed to innovative and practice-oriented teaching formats, including digital tools, on the BA, MA and PhD level.
  • They have a track record in securing third-party funding.
  • The ability to work in a team and a willingness to contribute to university self-governance are essential.
