Professorship in Early French and General Literature (50%, open rank)

50% Professorship in Early French and General Literature, with a focus on Humanism, is to be filled at the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences of the University of Basel beginning on February 1st, 2027, or by appointment with the successful applicant. 

Depending on the qualifications of the person to be appointed, the professorship is filled as a Tenure Track Assistant Professor (TTAP), an Associate Professor or a Full Professor.

Your position

We are looking for a scholar
  • able to represent French literary studies from the Middle Ages to the end of the 17th century, in teaching and research, with in-depth expertise in the late Middle Ages and Renaissance (due to Basel's historical role in humanism).
  • We expect theoretical and methodological diversity and an ability to analyse the significance of humanism in the present day.
  • The successful candidate will also be expected to participate in the cross-disciplinary BA, MA and doctoral programs developed within the Department of Languages and Literatures, as well as to contribute to the interdisciplinary networks of the Faculty engaged in research on the early modern period (Europa im globalen Kontext and Mittelalter/Renaissance/Frühe Neuzeit).

Your profile

  • Applicants must have a PhD, substantial post-doctoral research experience and an excellent publication record according to their academic age.
  • Previous experience in teaching and a willingness to engage with students and doctoral candidates in an innovative manner are expected.
  • A good record in securing external research funding is an asset. In addition to strong teamwork skills and a willingness to contribute to university administrative duties, the ability to teach in French at the highest level is essential.
  • A good command of German or English is also desirable and, if lacking, will need to be acquired.
