starting October 2025

The University of Basel's Integrative Prehistory and Archaeological Science (IPAS) and the Institute of Archaeology at the University of Zurich are inviting applications for a PhD position in archaeozoology/isotope analysis. IPAS is part of the Department of Environmental Sciences (DUW) and is a unique collaboration between the humanities and the natural sciences, taking an interdisciplinary approach to researching and better understanding the human past from the Stone Age to the present day.

Your position

This PhD position forms part of an SNSF Weave/Lead Agency Project entitled 'Deciphering Lakeside Settlements' (grant number 10002949). The successful candidate will analyse morphologically and morphometrically the hand collected animal bone material and conduct isotope analysis in order to investigate economical and supply systems and the interaction between lakeshore settlements and their environment. The candidate will collaborate closely with the other disciplines involved in the project, including archaeology, palynology, archaeobotany, ichtyoarchaeology and sediment genetics.
The candidate will obtain the PhD by publishing several articles in peer-reviewed academic journals.

Your profile

The ideal candidate will have a strong background in archaezoology and has training and experience in the morphological identification of animal bones. Knowledge of isotope analysis and archaeometry is also an advantage. An interest in wetland archaeology and Neolithic is desirable.
