PhD Candidate in Medical Robotics for Neurosurgery

The Neuro Robotics Group invites applications from excellent engeineers and scientists. We are looking for an enthusiastic candidate with excellent technical skills and a strong background in robotics and mechatronics as well as knowledge in micromanufacturing and material science to join the team. We offer a creative, international and multidisciplinary environment to conduct competitive research and development. Closely associated with the Department of Neurosurgery at the Bern University Hospital (Inselspital), we are dedicated to enhance patient care through fundamental and translational research.

More about the position
You will be part of our interdisciplinary project team of experts in mechanical and electrical engineering, robotics as well as neurosurgeons developing the next generation of robotic neurosurgical instruments. You will focus on device development (hardware and software), from conceptualization, design, prototyping, evaluation and assessment to the first devices that can be tested by our colleagues in neurosurgery. Your focus will be the development of small-scale robotic end-effectors for microsurgery in neurosurgical applications.
You have
  • Master degree in mechanical engineering or a closely related discipline
  • Expertise in micromanufacturing (manufacturing techniques and material science)
  • Expertise in robotics and mechatronics
  • Familiarity with mechanical design and CAD (e.g. Solidworks)
  • Experience in programming (C/C++, ROS, Python) and software development
  • Experience with medical device development is a plus
