Professorship in Deep Learning

The University of Basel invites applications for a Professorship in Deep Learning to join the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science (DMI). This position is a key part of the University's AI initiative, aimed at bolstering our leadership in AI and Deep Learning. The role will significantly enhance the capabilities of our Center for Data Analytics and support interdisciplinary research across the university, in particular in the university-wide research network Responsible Digital Society.

Your position

The new professor will enhance the research portfolio of the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science and contribute to teaching at the undergraduate and graduate level. They will be expected to foster interdisciplinary research collaborations across various departments and affiliated institutions and thus strengthen the University of Basel's contributions to solving complex global challenges through AI.

Your profile

We seek candidates with an outstanding research record in deep learning, in particular in one or several of the following areas: modeling and architecture development, domain adaptation & continual learning, agentic AI, uncertainty estimates, scalability and efficiency, personalized learning, and individual knowledge acquisition. Priority will be given to candidates who additionally have a strong record of interdisciplinary work, for example in medicine or life sciences, who address key issues in AI such as reproducibility, safety, trustworthiness and robustness, and who engage with the theoretical and algorithmic foundations of AI. A strong commitment to excellence in undergraduate and graduate teaching and mentorship is essential. Preference will be given to candidates who show promise in shaping the future of AI through both their research and educational practices.
