At the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Bern and the Bern University Hospital (Inselspital), Switzerland, the position of
Full Professor of Visceral Surgery and Transplant Surgery combined with the role of
Director and Head of the Clinical Division for Visceral Surgery
is to be filled as of August 1, 2026.
This position is part of the Department of Visceral Surgery and Medicine (UVCM), which integrates independently managed specialties in Visceral and Transplant Surgery, Gastroenterology, and Hepatology. The Clinical Division for Visceral Surgery and Transplant Surgery of the University Hospital of Bern is nationally and internationally renowned for its excellence in clinical care and research. It provides the full spectrum of diagnostics and treatment in the field, including outpatient and inpatient care, as well as highly specialized medicine (HSM).
The ideal candidate has extensive leadership experience at University level and will competently represent the field of visceral surgery in clinical practice, research, and teaching. She:he is expected to strengthen academic visceral surgery, further develop subspecialties, and integrate innovation in their work.
We are looking for a nationally and internationally recognized expert with outstanding surgical skills, a proven research profile, and strong competencies in innovation and management.
A key focus of the position lays in the collaboration between clinical and basic science research groups, making an interest in translational research essential. Regular publications and successful acquisition of competitive third-party funding are prerequisites.
The candidate should demonstrate expertise in an HSM field, interest in robotic surgery, as well as excellent communication and leadership skills. Integration into existing structures and fostering interdisciplinarity are crucial. Additionally, a strong competence in leading complex teams as well as a high level of conflict resolution skills is expected. Solid German language skills and at least a basic knowledge of French, or a willingness to acquire them after appointment, are required.
The candidate is expected to actively participate in teaching medical students, supporting academic career development, and promoting equal opportunities.
