Head of Research and Infrastructure Support Unit (RISE) 80-100%

The position of Head of the Research and Infrastructure Support Unit (RISE) at the University of Basel is to be filled as of May 1, 2025 or by arrangement. The position is limited to two years, with an option to convert it to a permanent position.
 
The Research and Infrastructure Support Unit (RISE) was established in 2021 and is administratively affiliated with the Digital Humanities Lab of the University of Basel. RISE supports researchers in questions relating to the conception of computer-aided research, the production, analysis and user-oriented presentation of digital data and the sustainable and open availability of data. As one of three units of the University's Scientific Computing, the work of RISE is steered and supported by a steering committee and a user committee.
 
RISE is active in consulting, training, implementation and utilisation of new technologies. It is primarily aimed at researchers in the humanities and social sciences at the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, the Faculty of Law and the Faculty of Economics, as well as researchers at the neighbouring Faculty of Theology and the Faculty of Psychology.

Your position

Your task is to support researchers in the conception, application, realisation and sustainable safeguarding of data-intensive research projects. Of particular interest are databases and repositories, digitisation, indexing and editing, real-time data and the analysis of data. You are interested in and committed to the dynamic development of digital research methods.
 
As head of RISE, they are themselves active in research support. This includes supporting projects with automated data extraction from (moving) images, sound and text, the development of workflows for (meta) data preparation, data analysis and data presentation as well as the implementation of these projects together with research projects. They support processes and regulations for the protection of personal rights and copyrights and work closely with the University Ethics Committee and the University's Data Protection Officer. RISE's tasks also include participating in and organising workshops on recent developments in the computer-aided social sciences and humanities and their infrastructures.
 
As head of RISE, you will be involved in the further development of the Research and Infrastructure Support Unit (RISE), lead the team, coordinate the support work of the team members and represent them externally in consultation with the Steering Committee. They cooperate closely with the other central IT service providers (IVIT providers) of the University of Basel (in particular Center for Scientific Computing sciCORE, Center for Data Analytics CeDA) and with the University Library Basel.
 
Active participation in joint as well as independent research projects and publications is possible.

Your profile

We expect

  • a university degree (MA/MSc) and a dissertation (PhD) or comparable experience in relevant subject areas.
  • Research experience with working methods in the humanities and/or social sciences
  • Practical experience in ICT and computational research in the humanities and social sciences; interest in innovative digital research methods
  • Experience in the development, organisation and application of research projects, in particular experience in research-supporting IT at universities
  • Leadership and project management experience, i.e. experience in organising, coordinating and delegating work and deploying the necessary resources in a team
  • Sense of communication, dialogue and mediation between different interest groups
  • Interest in the conception and implementation of university continuing education programmes
  • Very good knowledge of English
