The Optimization of Machine Learning Systems Group (Prof. A. Lucchi) at the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science at the University of Basel is inviting applications for a PhD position focused on the foundations and applications of reasoning in machine learning. The successful candidate will investigate both theoretical aspects – such as understanding the mechanisms and limitations of reasoning in modern learning systems – and practical applications, including solving mathematical reasoning problems and tackling the Abstraction and Reasoning Corpus (ARC) challenge. The ideal candidate has a strong background in machine learning and an interest in bridging rigorous theoretical insights with challenging real-world tasks.
Position available starting around November 2025 (position may begin later as well). The duration of a PhD in Switzerland is 4 years.
