PhD Position in Law, Technology, and Society

Your tasks

Professor Dr. Mariana Valente invites applications for a fully-funded PhD position at the intersection of law, technology, and society, based at the Institute for Law and Economics at the University of St.Gallen, in Switzerland.

Role Overview: The successful candidate will allocate 60% of their time to teaching, research, and administrative duties and 40% to their doctoral thesis. We encourage interdisciplinary, particularly on topics such as:
  • Digital platform governance;
  • AI and data governance, particularly in the public sector and digital welfare state frameworks;
  • Copyright in the digital era;
  • Online gender-based violence.

Your tasks well be:
  • Collaborate on research projects, including data collection, literature reviews, conducting interviews, and co-authoring academic papers.
  • Assist in teaching, including research support for courses, administrative duties, and student assessments.
  • Contribute to the strategic and organisational tasks of the Digital Policy Leadership Program – a collaborative initiative between the University of St.Gallen and Insper in São Paulo, Brazil.
  • Support the organisation and execution of academic events, workshops, and lectures.
  • Handle administrative, financial, and general support tasks.

Your profile

  • Master's degree in law, with all doctoral admission requirements of the University of St.Gallen met.*
  • Research experience or strong interest in law and technology.
  • Interest in policy issues related to the specified research topics and fostering partnerships in Switzerland and internationally.
  • Versatile and adaptable to various tasks.
  • Fluency in English.

Not required, but encouraged: 
  • Knowledge of Portuguese and/or work/research experience in Brazil, as the tasks involve partnerships and research in Brazil and Latin America.
  • Interest and research focus on Global South issues.
