A Master Student position is available in the Laboratory for Prenatal Medicine in the Department of Obstetrics and Fetomaternal Medicine, Inselspital, Bern University Hospital/Department for BioMedical Research, University of Bern for a highly motivated and hard-working student interested in studying the role of glial cells in perinatal brain injury. We are interested in the mechanistic underpinnings of injury to the fetal and newborn brain. This project aims to decipher whether astrocyte reactivity plays a causal role in disease outcomes following acute perinatal brain injury.
Tasks
- Work as an active member of a basic research laboratory team
- Acquire laboratory skills including primary cell culture, immunocytochemistry, immunohistochemistry, imaging, image analysis
- Think critically about experimental design and data interpretation
Requirements
- University Bachelor Degree in Biomedical / Biological Sciences or equivalent
- Working with rodent models of disease is a key component of this project; willingness to perform studies on mice and rats is required
- Motivation, curiosity, creativity, persistence, and strong work ethic are key to success in this position
We offer
- The opportunity to work as part of an active basic research laboratory team (Project leader - Post-Docs - PhD Students - Technician) led by Prof. Daniel Surbek and Prof. Andreina Schoeberlein. This position will be supervised directly by a senior PhD student in the lab
- Training to acquire basic laboratory skills as well as more specialized training in animal experimentation, immunohistochemistry/immunocytochemistry, cell culture
- Participation in Laboratory Meetings and Journal Clubs
- No financial compensation
